1 Mods for SCA-35? on Sat May 16, 2009 12:17 pm

Hello!
Just got a Dynaco SCA-35 from a friend. Started it up and it works and sounds ok. Have made some researching on the net for mods on this model. Is there anyone who has some experience on mods on the SCA-35 and what are recommended?

I have a Pas3 with Mr Bob Latino's ST-70 and are very satisfied with that. I'll keep the Pas original and thought I could fool around a bit with the SCA-35.

Please tell me if you have any thoughts in this matter.

Regards / Jan

Some have suggested (a) eliminating the tone controls and their associated integrated modules, and (b) replacing the original 7199 pentode/triode input driver/splitter with the 12DW7 twin triode circuit as executed in the Stereo 35 power amplifier.

Bob has a sticky-post above,

but here's the link:

He goes into some detail about this very subject.

Jan,

That link that Brenton mentions is for the ST-35 power amp and you are asking about the SCA-35 integrated amp. Roger Stevens has a web page at the the link below on mods for the SCA-35 integrated amp.

Thank You Bob!
It seems like I should start with the power supply. According to
http://www.curcioaudio.com/sca35_3.htm
this will give "Significant Improvement in in Dynamic Range and Resolution of Both Midrange and High Frequencies
Dramatic Improvement in Depth and Tightness of Bass Performance
Dramatic Improvement in System Reliability & Stability"
and then the tone controll bybass switch. Ok now I know what to do with my spare time... hmmm I also have a SP-6 to build.
So little time, so many "women"....

Jan,

I am sure that Curcio's power supply for the SCA-35 would improve the sound of any Dynaco SCA-35 integrated amp. My only criticism of Curcio's board (and this extends to virtually all of his boards, parts sets etc.) is that they seem to be priced (IMHO) a lot higher than they should be. He asks $65 for the board and $155(!) for the board and parts set. I checked the parts list and come up with about $30-$35 worth of parts and he asks $90 for the parts set? The most expensive parts are C1, C2, C3 and C4 at about $4 each. He wants $65 for a 2 1/2 inch by 6 inch board (about 15 square inches) and this seems high also. As a comparison, the VTA driver board for the ST-70 is 3 1/2 inches by 7 3/8 inches (about 26 square inches), retails for $35 and includes free shipping. Curcio has a $10 minimum shipping fee so your $65 board will cost you $75 shipped.

Just to be clear - I have no issue with the quality of the products that Joe Curcio sells or their design - just the pricing ..

Bob,
I know... I'll build it from scratch... but this seams to be the same thing, cheaper though

Another source for a power board is Audio Regenesis, they have a replacement SCA-35 board for under $40 with detailed instructions. See www.audioregenesis.com for more info.
