There are many "audio voodoo" products out there. It is hard for me to believe that anyone would even have the "balls" to offer such a product and even harder to believe that anyone would actually BUY such a product.

1. The $400 "ultra tweeters" operate and produce "energy" in the GIGAHERTZ (1,000,000,000 Hz) range to enhance your audio listening experience. Read about it at the link below ...

Here is my ST70 I just completed. Many probably would not choose solid state rectification (there is 600 uF on-board and NO hum) but most will probably agree the amphenol jacks in the front do a good job of providing modern physical separation of the input jacks while covering up (just barely) the old holes for the original jacks and especially the unnecessary stereo-mono switch hole.

I did provide a thermister to limit turn-on in-rush and I am absolutely NOT convinced that "cathode ...

I have an ST70 using the DIYTube driver board, solid state rectification and a Cyrus Chong cap board. My output tubes are a "matched" quad of Electro Harmonix 6CA7's with approx 150 hours on them. I have been biasing at 400mV per tube. I set my bias with the speakers connected and with the input sockets shorted. I notice that if my tubes are biased at 400mV after a short warm up, their bias will rise to 425 to 435 after a couple hours of play. If the amp is allowed to cool off, ...

I noticed that one of the current Dynaco kit manufacturers has a new (at least new to me) electrolytic can capictor for ST-70s that has higher ratings. The capacitor is advertised as being for thir MK III amp kit, but will also work with ST-70s. I asked the manufacturer to compare the capacitor with their other can capicitor upgrade for the ST-70 amp and got the following response:

The only thing common to these two capacitors is the MFD values and physical dimensions.

I am presently restoring a ST70 and while at it, installing a VTA driver board. In so doing, I have some observations about how the board itself is grounded. First off, the board does have a dedicated single wire leading to the chassis star ground. However, the board itself is held to the chassis with metal screws that contact the printed circuit board ground bus that goes around the perimeter of the board itself. Doesn't this negate the star-ground effect? Shouldn't the board be insulated ...

Roy Mottram, the designer of the VTA driver board and the SP-6, SP-8 preamps, was kind enough to ship me one of his wired and tested SP-8SE (Special Edition) "kit" preamps for evaluation. This preamp is 16 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches high and 12 inches deep and weighs in at a healthy 11 1/2 pounds. The preamp has four high level inputs and one phono level input. It has one tape loop and two outputs on the back. The two outputs are handy if you biamp at times as I sometimes do. The front ...

Just wondering if any of you are going to attend the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest? It is a great experience for anyone who loves this stuff! This is my third year going and it just gets better. As an added bonus for all us headphone nuts Can Jam will be there as well! So who's up for a roadtrip?

Today was a very good Dynaco day for me. I acquired a mint in the original box PAS-4 tube preamp, 2 SCA-35's and 2 Mark III mono-blocks!

Its amazing what people will throw away... only kidding. I did pay for some of the items.

My truck tilted on one side with all the weight in the passenger side.. :-)

Here is a photo of the PAS-4 preamp as found. Internally it was clean as a whistle.

Regards,

Sal

The problem:

New construction Mk III built from parts-bin stuff and new Triode-El transformers. Amp went together easily. Surprised at the simplicity of this amp. Plugged it in and got a case of run-away bias. Checked polarity of diodes and electrolytics. Measured resistor and cap values. Everything checks out. Rechecked all connections re schematic and everything seems to be correct. When bias was measured, I pulled ...

First, I received my chassis kit and driver board in record time! Thanks Bob and Roy. After looking things over, I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it OK to use a grounded cord or will this cause ground loop problems?

2. The schematic shows 2 cathode bypass caps (47uF) but they were not in my board kit. Have these been eliminated to reduce gain or should I install them? (Don't worry about sending replacement parts. I have them in stock.)

Thanks again for the fast shipping!

There is a basic diagram of a switching system that may be used to go back and forth from triode to pentode. The diagram below gives a little more detail. All you really need is a pair of DPDT switches that can handle 400+ VDC for the ST-70 and one DPDT switch for each of the Mark II, III and IV mono amps. You will also need two 100 ohm 1 watt ...

Dynaco is famous for making some of the best sounding tube equipment of the classic tube era. The PAS preamps were among the best sounding preamplifiers one could buy up until the time they went out of production. There are two circuit differences between the earlier PAS-2 and PAS-3 units and the later PAS-3X.

1) The "X" version had tone control potentiometers that were constructed to be electrically removed from the circuit when set to their flat position.

Power cables: Midnight Headaches, or "Why am I so stupid?"

Good evening all

I've been racking my almost-burned-out grey matter trying to understand how fancy power cables will help the sound of my ST-70... I can appreciate that you want as unimpeded a current path to your power transformer as possible (obviously) but the claims from some of the cable manufacturers are just so bizarre, I can't see how anyone would buy into it... and yet it seems they do make (a lot of) money.

Here is one example: http://www.lessloss.com/dfpc-signature-p-199.html ...

What speakers are you using on your ST70s. I'm running some Boston Acoustic A200s I picked up last weekend. The amp drives them fine but I expect the 29 year old crossovers could use a recap.

replacing a 40k pot with a 50k pot

Its not tubes, but I have a pat-4 preamp with a bad treble pot. The owners/assembly manual says its a 40k pot, but alls I can find here locally is a 50k pot. Is there any problem with this, or would it be better just to put a resistor in place, alls I want to do is center it to be flat. but the pot is all screwed up and I can't get good contacts.

thanks

EDICRON EL34s??

Has anyone here ever seen or heard of "EDICRON" tubes?

While rummaging around for some old stuff, I found, packed away among a bunch of NOS GE 6550s, two NOS EL34s which were branded "EDICRON."

The boxes are dark blue/grey, labeled "Edicron london Electronic Tube" and "Edicron london Electronic Valve" on alternating panels. The tubes have narrow glass envelopes with flat tops (that is, not rounded on top like my JJs) and the printing on them ...

ST70s as Mono Blocks

I think I read here that the mono switch setup that Dynaco used on the ST70 had a pretty limited application.
Has anyone ever set two ST70s up as mono blocks, how did or would it work?

Lights are on but nobody's home

I popped a fuse in my ST70 last night. I didn't have a spare so I went out at lunch and picked some up. I came home, put in a fuse and the unit powers up, at least the tube glow looks normal, but I'm not getting a reading across the bias points and of course no sound. I'm using a VTA board.

Has anybody ever encountered this or have an idea how to trouble shoot the problem?

Thanks,
