I am considering one of Bob's Dynaco ST-70 kits OR one of the Bottlehead kits. The thing that gets me though is that on the Bottlehead web site they mention a 4 to 6 week wait before you get your kit. Bottlehead charges your credit card the DAY of your order and put you on a list! They claim that they can provide you with a "lower price" this way. Personally I have never heard of any company doing business this way and feel if they charge your card they should ship the item. They have ...

Hi my name is Kevin, and I'm a newtubeaholic. I just built a ST120 amp from Bob Latino, and I'm enjoying it immensely, when I'm not breaking it. So far I had one of the KT88's that wouldn't bias (Bob replaced it), I broke a 12AT7, and I think I blew out the tube rectifier also. Luckily I bought a SS rectifier from Bob also, so I'm playing the tunes.

I can't figure out how to post pics on this forum. Can someone help me out?

I am pretty active on the Klipsch Community forum, and I posted ...

How to wire the MKIII in cathode bias

I would like to get rid of the fixed bias setup in my old MkIII's and wire them in the cathode bias instead. I hope in this way I won't have problems with setting and readjusting the bias anymore.

I am thinking of using 1K/5W resistors and 220uF/160V (orange Rubicon HSF) electrolytics at the cathodes, and 470K grid-leak resistors. The B+ is stock 480V.

What do you think? Is this worth doing sound and safety wise?

Thanks in advance

I have two ST 70s that I have built to be indentical using VTA boards and upgraded quad caps. The only difference is that I have fitted one of Bob's triode/pentode switches to one and haven't got around to doing that in the other.

The amp with the triode/pentode switch developed a progressively louder hum over the course of a couple of weeks and along with degraded sound quality from the speakers. I suspected the input transformer and ordered a replacement. While I was putting in the ...

Here is my ST70 I just completed. Many probably would not choose solid state rectification (there is 600 uF on-board and NO hum) but most will probably agree the amphenol jacks in the front do a good job of providing modern physical separation of the input jacks while covering up (just barely) the old holes for the original jacks and especially the unnecessary stereo-mono switch hole.

I did provide a thermister to limit turn-on in-rush and I am absolutely NOT convinced that "cathode ...

I've been throughly enjoying my VTA ST-70, recently picked up a Dared SL-2000A preamp and it seems like the perfect match. Now I'm looking into trying some different tubes.

Since I've already got some Mullard input tubes order and I've got driver tubes on a few Christmas lists () I was wondering what peoples experiences are with different rectifier tubes for this unit.

Mine currently has a Sylvania. I have no idea how it compares to the myriad of other choices out there.

I am presently restoring a ST70 and while at it, installing a VTA driver board. In so doing, I have some observations about how the board itself is grounded. First off, the board does have a dedicated single wire leading to the chassis star ground. However, the board itself is held to the chassis with metal screws that contact the printed circuit board ground bus that goes around the perimeter of the board itself. Doesn't this negate the star-ground effect? Shouldn't the board be insulated ...

I am thinking to lower the VTA output and this is a good chance to replace with better quality resistors.Any

suggestions?Riken, kiwame or what?

My vta version has the o.33 mf auricaps.

As far as i see the vta uses 0.22mf.

What is the best capacitance?

I want to replace the 0.022mf 150v ceramic disc of the

power transformer,can you please suggest?

I heard about these new Svetlana Black Sable EL34's. I checked online at the Tube Depot and they are pretty expensive. Has anyone used them or know anything about them ? RockyAM

I'll start it off with 3 companies that I have dealt with and have personally used products from whose products are priced fairly for what you get.

Its amazing what people will throw away... only kidding. I did pay for some of the items.

My truck tilted on one side with all the weight in the passenger side.. :-)

Here is a photo of the PAS-4 preamp as found. Internally it was clean as a whistle.

I'm hoping one of you electro-techs can help me figure this one out.

The problem:

New construction Mk III built from parts-bin stuff and new Triode-El transformers. Amp went together easily. Surprised at the simplicity of this amp. Plugged it in and got a case of run-away bias. Checked polarity of diodes and electrolytics. Measured resistor and cap values. Everything checks out. Rechecked all connections re schematic and everything seems to be correct. When bias was measured, I pulled ...

2 quick newbie questions

First, I received my chassis kit and driver board in record time! Thanks Bob and Roy. After looking things over, I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it OK to use a grounded cord or will this cause ground loop problems?

2. The schematic shows 2 cathode bypass caps (47uF) but they were not in my board kit. Have these been eliminated to reduce gain or should I install them? (Don't worry about sending replacement parts. I have them in stock.)

Thanks again for the fast shipping!

Triode/pentode switching system for the Dynaco ST-70

In one of the Sticky's on the first page of the Forum there is a thread about running your Dynaco ST-70, Mark II, Mark III or Mark IV in the triode mode. There is a basic diagram of a switching system that may be used to go back and forth from triode to pentode. The diagram below gives a little more detail. All you really need is a pair of DPDT switches that can handle 400+ VDC for the ST-70 and one DPDT switch for each of the Mark II, III and IV mono amps. You will also need two 100 ohm 1 watt ...

I thought this was old old OLD news, but I still get this question almost every week . . .

> I have a PAS-3 I'd like to upgrade, boards,switches, volume, jacks, etc.

> what are the sonic differences between the original pc-5 & pc-6

> boards as opposed to your sp-6 and sp-8 boards ?

> also do you sell the boards already built up for a nominal fee ?

> and do any of these board still retain the tone controls ?

> OR is it also possible to ship you my pre-amp ...

First post so I thought an intro might be in order. I'm new to the whole hi-fi world but have been building guitar amps for the last 5 years.

I recently received a Hammond AO-58 (looks like a point-to-point ST70) as a gift and now I'm hooked. I ordered the "rebuild" kit and a new power transformer earlier this week so maybe by next weekend I'll know what all the fuss is about.
