My first question concerns the rectifier tube. My st 70 has in its place a cardboard tube about 2 inches tall and an inch or so in diameter. I suspect that some one has made some changes prior to me buying it. Do I leave well enough alone or should I replace this with a tube and socket? Amp sounds fine, holds bias and doesn't have any obvious (to me) problems. Thanks for your time. Look forward to learning all I can.

    Hi,

If your amp has a "cardboard tube" in place of the rectifier tube socket then a previous owner has probably removed the rectifier tube socket and has added capacitance in place of the rectifier tube. This probably means that he is using diodes somewhere inside the amp to do rectification. If the amp is running fine, then I would just leave it as it is.

If you want us to check it out, see if you can send us a photo of the inside wiring and we can tell you more. Check out the sticky post above to see how to post a photo on the Dynaco Tube Audio Forum.
