Brand new here and looking for feedback. I know no one will be able over the internet to evaluate my skills in building a PH 14 (actually thinking about the 15, I like Sonicaps). I can appreciate the tempered skepticism in answering my questions and can actually appreciate the approach taken by tubes4hifi saying if you do not understand how to read a schematic and cannot follow instructions do not attempt this project. Most of my building has been done building speakers, I can look at a crossover and its legend of parts and put that together. Using available calculators I can modify or design a notch filter or baffle step circuit. You do not have to teach me to solder. I worked in audio at a time before CD and was the principal turntable guy, I also ran all tuners (analog) through performance tests and made adjustment where necessary, the owner did guide me here when necessary.
I just need to know if instructions are clear as to which wires go where especially wiring up the transformer leads. Another question is about diodes, do the instructions indicate proper direction of installation, if I was an EE I know I could tell from the Schematic .

I am pretty excited about the reports on what I hear about this phono.

well no one can tell you how *you* will do with it. but i built the octal dynaco mk3 drivers from roy and the instructions were pretty good. there were a few places where i could it was a cut n paste from another kit and some stuff wasnt quite accurate. i was able to figure it out. you can always post in the forum with any questions you have. a guy at work with no eletronics backgound and just a soldering iron built an S5 8L tube stereo amp kit successfully. so i am sure youll do ok. whats the worse. ase scenario? you blow a fuse. big deal. have a fire extinguisher handy when you do the smoke test (first time you power it on). I have built several of Roy's line and phono preamps and they went together quite well. He doesn't provide step by step directions, but he does give you all the information you need if you have basic knowledge of electronics. He provides you with board layouts and parts lists, schematics and wiring diagrams. He has posted building guides on several of the preamps, and has lots of pictures showing internal layouts on the tubes4hifi website. The diagrams do show how to wire the transfomers, and the PCB layouts show the proper orientation of the diodes, transistors and electrolytic capacitors. I have the PH14, coupled with the SP9 preamp, it's an incredible phono stage. I'm using mine with a good moving coil cartridge, I've never heard vinyl sound better! You will hear everything the recording has to offer if the rest of your system is up to it, I have a couple LP's that astonish me every time I spin them.

Thanks for the reply's so far. I forgot the number of antique radio's I have rebuilt working from schematics and the help of antique radio forums.

there's not a whole lot to a PH14! The hardest part is the power transformer, hopefully you can read the label on it which says the red and black wires go to 120vac, and the green and blue wires output 6vac. I can draw a diagram if you can't figure out how to connect the fuse and power switch. Input wires to inputs, outputs to outputs, and you're done! Photos here . . . . .
