Since the original thread is fairly buried and this will be my last photo post on this amp I am going to start this thread for any other discussion about this amp

It is a guitar amp built out of the iron set for a M-125 kit. Once again I am going to thank Bob for both the opportunity to buy the iron as well as many helpful emails we have exchanged about mounting and the specs of the iron. Amp should ship soon out to customer, its been a long build. just been lately waiting on this headshell to be built. I have some final gut shots available if people want them. The big circular cutout on the back is where a fan will be installed. Wrapping that up this weekend.

I also believe a thanks to you is in order as I believe you are also in charge of the kits. Correct me if I am wrong.

    Hi Nick,

    Looks nice ...

How did your guitar amp work out with respect to power, the "guitar sound" etc? I ask the question because the M-125 output transformers were interleaved/layered wound with M6 laminations and designed basically for a wideband audio hi-fi amp. You are the first (and I believe the only) person ever to use that transformer pair for a guitar amp.

    Bob

for the kind of guitar sounds the user is going for, a hifi, large power/frequency bandwidth approach is quite apt. He is generally looking for an extremely clean amp with large headroom which he can layer on effects pedals to achieve desired distortion and other types of guitar effects. The extra bandwidth is very nice for achieving good low end response when you push the amp into overdrive and push the power beyond normal hifi expectations. Of course as we push the output further we reduce bandwidth but that is to be expected. I should mention I allow the user to switch between UL and Pentode operation where Pentode operation will increase output power with added THD, something that is not a problem for guitar sound. I was quite impressed with the M-125 iron, it does not increase in temperature too much even during heavy duty cycles at high output power.

there actually is precedent for using hifi based designs for guitar and bass. the Sunn amp company started out taking Dynaco amps and just converting them to be used for guitar and bass. The designs slightly modded the preamp to include EQ controls but the power amps are direct or near clones of dynaco kits using dynaco iron. they had 2 x EL34, 2 x Kt88 and I believe 4 x Kt88 amps al[l based on Dynaco stuff.

Beautiful handiwork. Others should look at this picture a long time and aspire to that level of workmanship.

    Simply gorgeous.

I dont build the speaker cabs or speakers but this is what is looks like on my 4x12 cabinet (read 4 12" speakers)

The guitar is a custom made piece by a local builder, its a baritone, or a low tuned guitar. about 4 steps down from a standard E tuned guitar. The scale is extended to compensate for that low of a tuning.
