Hook up wire Empty Hook up wire

Post by Maintarget Sat Sep 14, 2013 12:54 am

I'm in the process of building an ST-120 and ran out of the supplied 20 gauge tinned solid core copper wire, Locally I can source 20 gauge solid core copper but cant seem to find any that is tinned so my question "Is this an issue?"
Should I hold out for the tinned wire?
    Thanks for your help

The tin coating found on the 20 gauge solid core copper wire supplied with all the VTA amp kits does help in making solder connections easier - BUT - the tin coating is not absolutely necessary. The original Dynaco amps used 22 gauge (one size smaller wire than what is found on the VTA amp kits) and that wire was not tin coated.

Just use the non coated 20 gauge wire if you have found some ....

As a humerous aside, I once had a customer send me a nasty Email which chided me for suppling "cheap aluminum wire" with his VTA amp kit instead of copper wire. I told him to take his utility knife and scrape the gray colored (tin) surface of his wire and let me know what was underneath. Of course it was copper ..

I get the six color kits from here ...

Nice and handy ... good wire. I get both the 20 and 22 gauge kits solid for a good variety and selection.

I kind of figure the tin coating was to facilitate soldering however I thought I would ask the question anyway just to make sure.
My occupation has kept me working seven days a week for several Months now and did not fit my original plan to build a custom enclosure for my ST-120 which I had started and figured Id finish in about three years at the pace I was going.
I just couldn't wait so I went with the original kit plans I'm in the process of installing the driver board now.
I'll post some pictures and thoughts on the build in the near future
    Thanks guys

The six colors also help to trace what's what once you start bundling wires ... I also go with 20 gauge for current, and 22 for signal. Not necessary, but what da hey, eh.

    Here's my ST-120 ...

Darn ... I was gonna suggest a race to see who finished the custom build last ... tongue

My current excuse is doing all the outdoor stuff that could be an issue once the snow starts to fly. Which from today's weather, could be any time now ... Brrrrrrr!
