    very sinple question here

Post by islanddave on Tue Oct 15, 2013 11:48 am

I have a Dynaco st-70 and would like to use a ss receiver for a preamp. The receiver has a pre out and main in. how do I hake the connection?

    Thanks Dave

Hi Dave --- assuming there is no impedance mismatch between the ST-70 and the PreAmp Stage of the receiver, you (1) would pull out the PRE OUT and MAIN IN Jumpers from the RCA jacks on the receiver which will disconnect the preamp and amplifier sections of the receiver.

Then (2) using two RCA type audio cables (one for each channel) you would connect them at one end to the ST-70 and the other end to the PRE OUT jacks of the receiver.

Then the preamplifier controls would drive the ST-70.

I also suggest to make sure both amps being switched off before you do that to avoid potential thumps harming your speakers.

That will get you going, but I assume you also want to be able to still use the built in amp on the receiver?

In that case, just loop out with a "Y cable. Did that for years on my McIntosh amp driving it with the front channels of a Sansui quad. I originally used the cable variety "Y", but eventually went with the hard connectors ... more a bling thing than anything else ...

One cable set connects to the PRE OUT ... the other loops back to the AMP IN to complete the loop. Also works with a tape loop.

Went one step further with my shiny new ST-120 build ...

OOooh ... look! It's an "innie" !! tongue

Same principle, only as long as I was building a custom case, I did the loop internally so all that shows is the jacks. I can still use it with a standard pre-amp ... just use one set of jacks is the only difference.
