Here is a company that has a free program that creates a "simulated vinyl sound" as if your PC audio was a record being played on a record player.

You have complete control over the following parameters:

Mechanical Noise: The amount of turntable motor rumble and noise
Wear: Control how worn out the record is, from brand new to played a few thousand times
Electrical Noise: Internally generated electrical noise, such as 60 Hz grounding hum
Dust: The amount of dust on the record
Scratch: The number and depth of scratches on the record
Warp Depth: The amount of warping and the warp shape for the record—from no warp to the edges totally melted and warped

I haven't had the time to try it yet but if you try it, let us know how well it simulates the "vinyl experience." Does it do a good job of adding pops, clicks and rumble etc.? Link below ..

I see on the download questionnaire they ask what instrument you play. Assume it defaults to "bass player." alien

Wow, I can't help but think that this program was devised by a hard-core cynic. Kinda' funny though.

Ahhh, the days when you had to tape a penny to the tonearm to play a warp record....   I've been working on my music collection for the past 30 years to minimize these effects.  But you would though have to be a little off to listen to intentional vinyl distortions on a regular basis.  Really meant for studio production and did I play with a demo of it a while back.  Wouldn't think they would sell too many copies of Vinyl.

In a few years Izotope will offer a similar product - Digititis - simulates jitter, grain, silibance, aliasing, clicks, pops, dropouts, robot voice, data compression, etc.   They can use my current system for a model if they want.   rabbit

I do though love Izotrope disc mastering tools (Ozone).  Good stuff!

I could perhaps understand adding a but of dust, scratch, and wear for a "lark". But motor rumble and 60-hz grounding hum???

Both of those things are part of the euphonic distortion that makes vinyl great!

Feature request ... the sound of a cantilever breaking loose from it's mount and sending the cartridge skipping and sliding to the spindle with the volume cranked to 11 ... priceless!

Had that happen to a Pickering XV15 stylus where the cantilever bushing turned to goo ... I HATE that when that happens!

60-hz ground hum helps to makes vinyl great? We must live in very different universes. Smile

Does it let you add hum to just one channel? How about 120Hz "buzz" from a bad power supply cap?  Very Happy

I've used that program a couple times with my DAW. Once in a theater production sound effect of, well, playing an old record! Another time a composition student asked me to use it on a project of theirs; also as an effect. The program works great and is easy to use, with some basic settings for "different eras", and then variable controls for adding in as little or all the nastiness you could possibly want.
It helps remind me why I don't listen to vinyl much any more!
