    another VTA ST70 chassis variation

    Post by Guest on Sun Sep 07, 2014 5:07 pm

    this is my latest build, a custom VTA ST70 in a Hammond chassis with mini retro look VU meters.
    I kind of stumbled across these VU meters. A true VU meter they are not I guess, they come with their own driver circuit and you can either have a low level signal or high level signal input.
    Low level is preamp level output, no good in this instance as it will interfere  with the amps input.
    So I am using the high level input, straight from the speaker output, hence not a true VU reading. The VU meter driver board comes with two trimpots to adjust the meter deflection and I guess one can get close to a correct reading.
    If you buy these as a kit, they come with a neat little fully encapsulated mini transformer, capable for 115 or 220V mains and with 6,9 & 12V tappings. It is small enough, as is the VU driver pcb, to fit inside the chassis.
    I don't have an inside chassis shot yet, will post one once I get a chance to take a couple.

    Holger,

    Your custom VTA ST-70 amp looks really nice. You did an excellent job on the assembly of the amp .. Yes - post up a shot of the interior wiring when you get the chance ..

    (NOTE - wiring photo posted above on 9/7/14)

    thanks for the site Bob..........

    it sounds like we all expect the VTA ST70 to....really amazing, I am using NOS RCA 5963's as drivers, very nice indeed!
    Right now, I am running it without my preamp, which is waiting for a toroid transformer, the VTA ST70 just sounds amazingly clear and really a good bass as well using the KT88's, which have been running for some months now and sound sweet!

    Very nice ... but then again, you're building what ... about one a week? I figure you should be getting pretty good at it by now ...  jocolor

    And yes ... the 5963's were a pleasant surprise here also. They match up quite nicely with the KT120's ... my tube rolling days may be over.

    *Yeah ... THAT could happen!  lol!

    PS ... colin86325 called you gorgeous ... ;-}

    wish I was building one a week!!!!!....then I could maybe retire!

    have not tried the 5963 with the KT120...I use 6SN7 & 6SL7 with the KT120's/ST120......5963 and select 12AU7's with the KT88/ST70
