Grooveshark - music download site - shut down yet back ?

Post by Bob Latino on Wed May 06, 2015 8:39 am

The music industry has been after music download sites like Grooveshark for the past 10 years or so and has been able to bring law suits against many and shut them down for giving free access to copyrighted music tracks. On April 30th Grooveshark, which had been up and running for 10+ years, was shut down. See link below ..

    Grooveshark

Somehow or another they have "reappeared" at the link below .. The word is now that this site does not have any music there but has a search engine that points to web sites that DO have the music you want available. I guess they are trying to claim that the "music is not on our site so don't blame us if you download copyrighted music" ...

    Grooveshark.io

All you do is type in the artist or song that you want and a list comes up with a play button and a download button. I could not get the play button to work but every track I downloaded worked fine.

You can read about the demise and reappearance of Grooveshark at the link below .. ..

    Hi all:
Grooveshark's return although not surprising to me points to a bigger issue that affects our freedom to choose what we read, see and listen to. It's all about options.
Take the example of "Pirate Bay" at one time the most visited site on the net. They have been the subject of herculean efforts to remove it from the net but it continues to re-appear after more than 10 years of pointed efforts to ban it.
Why? because in a real sense the internet only works properly if it is a free forum. My point is that as long as the net remains relatively free there is no way that the copyright gang can do anything. Free minds are smarter and more innovative than monopolists plots to corner the music market with copyright laws.

This is why the government who are subsidized by the copyright gang (among others) are attempting to restrict the net through legislation.

This is totally bogus, the music industry is one of the most exploited around and it has screwed artists for a hundred years.
Most artists are forced to sell the rights to their intellectual property to get published. Fortunately with a freely available internet many successful artists have sidestepped this by releasing their work free on the net.

The point here is that in the best of all worlds we have to keep the internet a free and open forum, of course everything has a price but some prices are worth paying.

How can we help to accomplish this?. We all need to vote with our feet. You all have the right to choose how to participate in the marketplace. That is something everybody can do individually. It's a real  exercise of your personal power and expression of your POV.

Downloading has become ubiquitous and it's too late to turn back the clock. We are all hooked on downloading and no one can change that with copyright laws. Download sites aren't going to disappear in the near future.

Sorry for the somewhat political opinion on this DIY forum but it is directly connected to the hobby we all enjoy.
Good topic Bob you got me going. God bless Grooveshark and all its kind.

    Baddog,
I see things from a writer's POV. I am paid for my work, depend on that pay, and when I see it copied without even attribution in another medium, I tend to get homicidal. As we used to say in the newspaper business, "Plagiarism is the sincerest form of theft."
Not that "net neutrality" (what a hoax!) is going to fix any of this just plain-ripping off of artists -- musicians or otherwise. The 'net has to some extent freed musicians from the recording industry's tyrannies, but you can't work for free forever and expect to eat, too.
ASCAP and the record industry are looking out for themselves, not for the creators. Maybe it's time for the artists to pull their heads out of their bongs long enough to figure out how to get a paywall up.
Meantime, I will patronize outfits like Tidal and Spotify who at least shove a shekel the performer's direction from time to time.
Apple could've cornered this market, but they got greedy with artists and consumers alike.

Of course there are two sides to all issues. I too am a published author but there are numerous ways for people to benefit from their intellectual property other than giving it up to copyright mafias.

We are merely suffering from myopia having been weaned on the current corporate models. The whole thing has been set up for a long time like that and works poorly for the authors as they get a pittance and the copyright holders make money forever. How is that better??
The unfair model has become ingrained in our thinking. The public accepts it but are not the ones losing out. Yet!
Can you tell me how you would know if artists or authors were even getting what they are supposed to be paid?
I doubt many if any authors/artists are able to penetrate the ASCAP, BMI etc. firewall to prove it. The info is collected out of our reach so how can we know if we receive correct payments.
You cannot trust corporations not to be greedy they use a bottom line mentality which is IMHO amoral. If it is easily hidden it will be.

Many artists have fanatical fan bases and these are the kind of people including me who would send a buck to them if they asked for it and I do.

All I need is a teaser tune for free to pop a buck in their hands for the album. That buck goes 100% to the artist. How any plays to add up to a buck when the play rate is pennies?

Most of the music I collect (jazz) is by dead artists which kind of makes it moot does it not??
Self publishing on the net may be as profitable to the artist if done right than the arbitrary trickle down income they must accept now.

Apple blew it because if you look at their history they are the quintessential copyright monster and fought everybody including Microsoft for years. Greedy is a succinct description of Apple.

Apple is super hypocritical as both of Jobs and Gates gangs were given all the ideas and devices of the current computer industry by Xerox in the very beginning except for the operating languages.

Apple in fact uses the intellectual property of the inventors of the Unix language and makes a lot of to do about their shell sitting on top of it as being the actual system. Not! Apple is all smoke and mirrors but they have a killer promo department. BTW they lost the main suit with Microsoft over windows operating system.
IMHO the alternatives to corporate copyright buying, stealing and controlling materials is to put a shorter copyright  protection time limit to the lifetime of the author on all material after which it becomes public domain. Better for posterity. There is a lot more behind copyright than appears on the surface.

Way off topic here on Grooveshark thing but this is an issue we all may have to face if the net does not remain open and free from bought and paid for legislation that is not in our interest..

Downloading rules and is not going away!

    Hi Pedro,

I was able to get the files to play directly through either Chrome or Internet Explorer. I was using AOL's version of Internet Explorer and I could not get them to play directly that way .. Strange ?

    All - Just fyi.

Tidal and Qobuz stream at 16/44, (1,411) CD resolution.

The max from Spotify or others is 320K, one fourth the resolution.

At $20 per month for 25 million CD quality tracks, a great deal.

Not sure I understand your point, Tidal is FLAC at 1,411, no compression.

It is the same as a CD.

One cd or so a month will cost the same as having 25 million tracks available anytime on Tidal.

Gotta go with Audio Bill on this, plus Tidal turns your iPhone or Droid into a remote control (well, kinda sorta). It certainly holds its mud with my Rega Apollo-R CD player. Tidal seem to be expanding their classical library and it's nice to find some oldies you can't even get on CD anymore.

I am so totally happy that Jay Z and his Tidal are preserving the profits and pushing $$ down to those poor, starving artists Beyonce, Rihanna, hisself, Madonna and Kanye. Now they can make some money.

Grooveshark has more lives than a cat. They are now running off > Grooveshark.li as of 5/31/15. If you read below, this fellow, who claims to be a Grooveshark employee, says that he has 12 more web sites "in his back pocket" and will pop up again if the RIAA shuts him down again. He claims "Grooveshark will never die". Read at the link below of his open letter to the music industry ..
