    https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/i-think-i-ve-just-seen-absolute-proof-that-audiophiles-are-insanely-gul

I think I've Just Seen Absolute Proof That Audiophiles Are Insanely Gullible
I didn’t want to crap on someone’s sales thread, so I thought i’d post my amazement here. The focus of my disbelief? The "Dalby D7-Vinyl Stabilizer," which is a damn weight that screws onto the turntable spindle to hold the record securely onto the platter. Listed retail? 4000 British Pounds! (although a mag listed it at $6,800! On sale here at AudioGullible for the bargain basement price of 2500 British Pounds, or $3600 US dollars!!! Just read a few snippets of the sales ad . . .

"The D7-Vinyl Stabiliser has a sonic character that brings music to life and the ability to elevate the entire audio frequency from the veil and mechanics inherent in prerecorded music. The gains are immediate, with sweeter high frequency extension while the mid and lower registers are beautifully controlled. The soundscape is wider, higher and deeper, allowing the music to breathe more naturally."

I’m sorry, but I’m calling total BS on this. A friggin’ weight brings "music to life," "sweeter high frequency extension," "allowing the music to breathe more naturally . ." Come on. Its a modified paperweight that screws onto the platter. One can only imagine what this guy thinks about some $20K interconnects for the turntable -- the music probably writes itself! And don’t forget the amazing improvement that a $4,000 carbon fiber mat might add . . . You probably would think you were hallucinating because the music breathed so much it was oozing out of the speakers, like on some of my more memorable nights in college in the ’70’s.

Now I have never heard this amazing gift to the audiophile community, so maybe it is the audio equivalent of the Second Coming, but really? $5,800 for this? It confirms to me that there is a certain insanity/gullibility/too much money/snake oil in this so-called "hobby," (which is a hobby to customers and ridiculous business for some manufacturers). When is enough enough? What about audiophile paint, that has amazing sonic qualities to cut down reflection and make the soundstage so wide that you feel you need a new apartment? Don’t forget the audiophile couch, that is sonically neutral but promises to position your ears to "bring music to life?" OK, I’ve made my point. No offense to the seller of the snake oil, but really . . . When is enough enough?

This concludes my rant for today. Smile

Deepee comment: turntable spindle weights aren't completely snake-oil and do wonders on the paper-thin vinyl issued in the late 1970s just to hold the suckers flat. But $40 will getcha a nice one . . .

At the bottom of the page:

    "© DalbyAudioDesign 2011"

Among the so-called "D7 Vinyl Stabilizer DNA":

    "Built in limited quantities"

So if they have made and sold two in five years for £4000 (the ad does show one in lignum vitae and one in ebony), that's £8000 that they would not have "earned" otherwise. All that for making what looks like a pepper mill and putting it on a web page. Pretty good, I'd say...but for WHOM?

Here is the link to the vinyl clamp:

    Dalby D7

It does include a flight case to hold the stabilizer!

There is a guy on Audiogon who refurbishes vintage turntables, including many Thorens models. He is legit:

    Thorens TD-160

    As always, Caveat Emptor!!

If the record mat were made of felt, I can imagine a spindle weight might help prevent slippage and also compress the sponginess to some extent.

I use a Plattamat, from Analogue Innovations--audibly better than the Linn felt rag mat, and a good deal cheaper than the PT Barnum Special Dave's presented above.

Were I in the market for a fully restored Thorens or AR turntable, I would c/o Dave at vinylnivrvana.com. Nice guy and seems to do exquisite work. He sells directly or through Etsy and is easy to get on the phone.
For a platter spindle-weight, the one I have I got from Jeff at j-corder.com in Gig Harbour, Wash. It's a pretty little thang and quite heavy. His speciality is rehabbing Technics and Pioneer reel-to-reel decks and they are beautiful, but very spendy. But at least, unlike cassettes, you can get newly made high quality open-reel tape.
I will press the case for a turntable spindle-weight and a cork platter-mat. The vinyl they were pressing at the end of its golden age in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before CDs took over, was very flimsy and floppy and the spindle-weight cuts a lot of wobble out of the equation. A cork platter mat gets rid of a lot of the static that accumulates. But together this is a $100 solution, not a $10,000 snake-oil solution. It doesn't enhance the sound-stage or make your tubes glow blue, it just gets rid of the crud inherent to the vinyl medium.

Ah yes... the guy for whom everything is a "BOLD" restoration. But it's good to know that he's legit, in case I do find myself looking for something that he's selling!

No, but I have an extra green highlighter that I use to paint the edges of my cds.

I have experienced Tidal streaming sounding better by painting the cds stored away in my basement.....

    Maybe it's the paint fumes.
