Here's an informative, if long-winded, OohTube piece on buying and using DeoxIT products. Don't be put off by the tawdry theme music...

    DeoxIT Demystified Empty DeoxIt Demystified

Post by Gregg R. Sun Mar 27, 2016 1:42 am

Last week, I discovered that one of the AMT tweeters on my quad of Legacy Studio HD monitors had gone dead. The speaker wires were correctly connected. Worried that I would need to ship the speaker back to Springfield, IL, I disassembled the offending monitor. Everything seemed secure inside, but before I closed it up again, I sprayed all internal connections with a good dose of DeoxIT D-5. After hooking up the speaker cables, the AMT tweeter was working again!!

DeoxIT D-5 is on sale at Parts-Express for less than $10 a can, until the end of April.

Nice to know. Wish they made a version that would work on my knees and lower back.

Wish I'd seen this video before applying a bit of D5 to the mogul base and socket of a 200-watt lightbulb awhile back. No kiddin' that stuff's flammable when wet. Did't quite get to the flashover point but it smoked up the living room pretty good before I turned the bulb off. Those light bulbs warm up a lot quicker than tubes!

You'll also want to be careful on dial and meter "glass". I was spraying merrily away on a Sansui QRX7001 a while back and was a bit bummed to see that some had somehow gotten inside one of the meters and crazed it. That cover also has the ribbed sides to reflect the light over the face of the meter dial. Resourceful little Polack that I yam, I dremeled out the center section with a cutoff wheel - that's covered by the dial "glass" anyway.

Truth be told, I actually prefer the look of the meter now ... much clearer without that extra layer of plastic. Have to go in and dremel out the other one some day.

So anyway ... short version ... if in doubt, protect the cosmetic bits if nothing else.

Oh. Another helpful tip. Never throw those old straws away. You can always customize those for odd jobs. Here's one I built for getting into the otherwise impossible locations.

    DeoxIT Demystified Qrx9001-d5straw

Took a couple three tries to get the bend as the straws have a tendency to want to melt, but it can be done if you time it right. The two straws are just heat shrunk together for additional length. I've quite the collection of those for this and that.

The active ingredient(DeoxIT) is nonflammable. The carrier solvent is flammable for about 2-3 minutes before it dries. You are expected to wear protective glasses, gloves, and face protection; and be sure to wash hands and exposed skin after use. I will have to try that sometime! Maybe a HazMat suit.

Please, just remember to let the propellant dry out before lighting things back up. I would hate to see this forum disintegrate into three or four survivors. I never saw smoke coming out of a lamp socket before. It was kinda cool but once is enough.

DeoxIT D-5 saved me again!  I was tube-rolling yet again, and got a low level crackling noise in the left channel. Flipping the pentode/triode switch seemed to solve the problem, at least temporarily. It came back two days later, so I carefully dribbled a few drops of D-5 on the switch lever, using a needle bottle. I did the same with right switch. I moved both levers back-and-forth a few times, and  have been noise-free for a week!! The amp seems quieter then it ever has.

For the record, I did NOT follow the safety precautions for using D-5.

No, just the "it" part. Depending on your definition of what "it" is, of course.
By all means, follow Greg R's advice and spray a little D-5 on a hot appliance or one about to get very hot. Make sure all insurance policies are paid up first, and file us a report from the Burn Centre in Seattle in the aftermath.

I can think of one, non-audio application where DeOxit® was NOT the product of choice.

On a digital SLR, the thumbwheel on the back, which operates a rotary switch, started to become intermittent.  The user sprayed DeOxit® into it; I think he said he had read about that on a forum someplace.

That fixed it for a month or so and the problem came back with a vengeance.  When I looked at it, with the camera disassembled, the problem was apparently caused by excessive grease put into the rotary switch by the manufacturer.  It mixed with particles from "normal" use of the switch, causing the intermittents.  The DeOxit® then left its own residue.  I washed out the switch with a plastic-safe solvent, dried it and applied a very tiny amount of grease, then put it back together.  NO MORE PROBLEM.

Later a manufacturer's representative told me that spraying a small, controlled amount of a plastic-safe, non-deposit, quick-evaporating control cleaner underneath the thumbwheel and then continuously turning the wheel for several minutes until the solvent evaporates, is actually a procedure used by their own service department, and it doesn't require disassembly.  Apparently they were aware of the excess grease, stopped that practice at the factory, and found that the switch runs perfectly well with residual lubricant left over after it is rinsed and operation of the switch pushes the excess aside; and that there is sufficient space inside the switch, with a shield under it, so the stuff doesn't go where it could do some harm, if a properly controlled quantity is used.  I'd feel better taking it apart like I did, but I can see the company trying to save an hours' labor and desoldering/resoldering a dozen tiny wires.  They also don't say this in public, probably knowing that somebody would misunderstand, read "SPRAY IS OKAY" and empty out half a can of DeOxit® or worse, WD-40® in an attempt to fix his problem.
