    Ventilation space. Empty Ventilation space.

Post by Dogstar Sat Jul 30, 2016 8:14 pm

I have a Thorens TD-160 that I need to have setup on a wall shelf because of the suspension system. When I put it on the top shelf of my audio rack it is too sensitive to any movement in the floor.

So how much ventilation space above the VTA ST-120 with KT120's? The amp and the tubes do not get extremely hot as its currently configured...but I just don't want to restrict airflow that would cause the amp to get too hot.

If it comes down to it I will get a fan to setup behind the amp. If that's what I need to do can someone direct me to the kind of fan that I can plug into a wall outlet that's quiet and moves large volumes of air? I was thinking of something like the fan that would go inside a computer case. But as I said...110v?

I use this small fan next to my ST-120. It is extremely quiet and comes with sufficient hardware for mounting in many configurations. It does not move a HUUGE amount of air, but certainly enough to keep the unit cool enough with 8 inches of top clearance. Good luck.

P.S. This fan can be left on 24/7 for years. I've used it constantly for eight months.

That's what I was thinking of when I pictured it...but the only ones I've seen are the ones that are inside a computer case that get plugged into the cases power supply.

Turntables, especially good ones with sensitive cartridges, do pose a problem. If your speakers sit on the floor the table almost always must mounted to a load-bearing wall. The floor and wall vibrate at different (out of phase?) frequencies, thus offsetting mechanical feedback transmitted from the speaks to the console. I think you could mount the shelf fairly close to the pre-amp but as for power tubes, to paraphrase HRH Latino, the only thing the tops of those babies should see is blue sky or the ceiling.
I had a horrible rumble problem even with good TT suspension, before getting that wall-mount advice from some decent person on this board, backed up by Dick Vandersteen. Vandersteen also advised using MDF for the turntable shelf.

I don't have rumble problems with the Thorens. I just have problems with the suspension causing the stylus skip simply from walking across the room to my chair after lowering the stylus onto the album. Music sound very light and 3 dimensional when play albums through the turntable. Much more so than when playing them through my Technics SL1200 with a Denon DL110 or my Technics SL1100 with a Shure V15T3. The Thorens has a Shure M97xe on the tonearm.

Wall mounts are the best way to mount a turntable.

I have been looking for a gentle breeze fan that is virtually silent for summertime operation.  Most blow way too much air to be anywhere near silent.  The fan arrived yesterday and happy to report it is extremely quiet and moves enough air to be effective.  I just set it behind the ST-120 and aim it at the power transformer.  3 hours of operation and the power transformer temperature is about 106 deg. F measured center mass front (inside) of the transformer laminates (ambient temp 70 deg F).  The secret is to keep the air moving and not stagnate.

Wall mounting of my turntable has been the only way for me to control vibration from overly bouncy floors in my house.
