    stepped attenuator cable length

Post by rymi on Wed Jun 07, 2017 10:17 pm

question for those using the stepped attenuator with the vtast70.

how long of interconnects can you get away with between your source (phono, cd etc) and the attenuator?

Which stepped attenuator are you talking about and exactly how do you intend on connecting your source to your amp? Directly or through a preamp?

It depends on the output characteristics of the sources.
And "phono", an unamplified cartridge cannot be used without a riaa-amp, thus it's the
output characteristics of the riaa-amp used that is importent.

I have used the VTA stepped attenuator with cable lengths up to 3 meters with no issues. After maybe 4 to 5 meters the capacitance of the interconnect cables can act as a low pass filter which can restrict high frequencies a bit. Personally, I think that you would have to go somewhat longer than 5 meters and maybe as long as 10 meters (almost 33 feet) before you even noticed any attenuation of the high frequencies from long interconnects ..
