    Phono question Empty Phono question

Post by bubbasweet Sat Oct 14, 2017 10:36 am

I have 2 PAMs and 2 MK3s and when I use phono the speakers oscillate slightly pushing my wooferi n and out on my dynaco A25s. Someone said it is subsonic frequencies. does anyone have a recommendation for inline filters or something I can use with my unit and what frequency to shunt as they seem to come in different values? I use the 78 selection on my PAMs because to me it sounds better than 33 or the RIAA input. Anyone have this problem?

78 gives you 10db more boost than riaa at 20 hz. That may account for the woofer pumping. Playing your records at 78 eq may sound better to you but you may need to retrain your ear to what the recording engineer
intended the record to sound like.

Keven at KAB Electro Accoustics https://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/rf1.htm
has just what you need. It's a powered in-line filter that goes between the phono preamp and line preamp and gets rid of the subsonics without screwing up the bass at all.
About $100, I'd sell mine for $50 plus shipping. Give him a call at (908) 754-1479. I have had one and don't use it now because the antique Thorens TD-165 doesn't need it, but it sure helped the VPI and Regas I had before.  If I can dig it up I'll put it on the "for sale" thread, or PM me. But talk to Kevin first about your symptoms. Decent guy.

Deepee's link doesn't work for me.  But it appears the price has gone up to $179 so if interested you may want to jump on his offer of 50 bucks!...

Thanks, arledgsc. I've updated the link on my original post.
Gee, at $179 I should just keep mine Smile
I should add that Kevin is *the man* to go to for Technics turntables. He doesn't carry NOS or rehabbed Technics tables anymore, but if you've got one that needs fixing or brought back up to spec, talk to him. He also has a very good stock of Ortofon carts priced way below current retail from such outfits at NeedleDoctor.
