New Dynaco ST-70 Series 3 Awarded TAS Product of the Year 2018

Post by Gregory Braun on Fri Dec 14, 2018 9:16 pm

In the January 2019 issue of The Absolute Sound
Dick Olsher reviews the new Dynaco ST-70 Series 3
and gives it good marks. He noted the biggest
improvement is a more solid bass, and an improved
and more powerful power supply section.

They are hand built in Canada, not China as some
    have suggested.

In the same issue of TAS the ST-70 Series 3
earns the 2018 Product of the Year Award for
    Vacuum Tube Power Amplifiers.

Dynaco is offering the new ST-70 Series 3 at
the special price of $1499 with free shipping.
They normally sell for $2999, so their special
offer is a pretty good one.

I don't know how long the sale is in effect, so
I ordered two of them yesterday. I received
a confirmation notice this afternoon with FedEx
    tracking numbers.

They're shipping from Richmond, British Columbia
and should arrive here in Wisconsin next Friday,
    the 21st of December.

I'm looking forward to hearing them in my system
    just in time for Christmas.

When they arrive, take some photos of the INSIDE of the amp. I would like to see the board on the inside of the amp.

As to the $1499 "sale" price > I don't see them going back up in price.

Greg, if the posts seem puzzling, this amp has already been discussed (mostly in a negative light because of the price) at

    http://dynacotubeaudio.forumotion.com/t2597-canadian-company-has-acquired-the-dynaco-trade-name

The owner of this board has his own line of updated Dynaco power amps

    http://www.tubes4hifi.com/bob.htm

...and they're very nice ( I own the VTA ST 70, along with a SP 14 line and PH 14 phono pre).

You're the first here to to have a hands on with the Canadian ST 70 and we'd all be curious to see what you think.
    Congrats on your amps.

    Bob,

    Will do...

The reviewer took his apart but didn't include
any pictures to accompany the article.

From the description he gave he states that
    a military-grade double-sided epoxy-fiberglass
circuit board was employed to eliminate any
point-to-point wiring other than controls and
    audio connectors.

He didn't say as such, but it sounded like the
boards were hand-stuffed in-house and then
tested and burned in before final assembly.

One thing I liked was the single pair of output
connectors and a small slide switch to select
    either 4 or 8 ohms.

I've often wondered why manufactures go to
the trouble of using 3 or 4 output connectors
for each channel, instead of using just 2 high-
quality speaker terminals and a good switch.

    Bob,

I would tend to agree. $1499 is a more reasonable
price considering the competition; VTA, Van Alstine,
or an upgraded Dynaco Stereo 70 can all be had for
    about the same price.

I built a pair of DynaKit ST-70 amps in the 1970's
when I was in college. I built two at the time so
I could strap them and drive the rather inefficient
    Dahlquist DQ-10 loudspeakers.

The Audio Research D-76 had just come out, but it was
way too expensive for a poor college student like me.

The two Stereo 70s and a PAS-3x pre-amp got me through
school quite nicely. I bought a parts upgrade kit from
Van Alstine to upgrade the PAS-3x and delete the tone
    controls.

The Stereo 70s unfortunately were sold along with the
    PAS-3x.

I still have a pair of Dynaco MKIIIs and a pair of the
40 watt Dynaco MKIVs that I'll get out of storage for
    comparison.

These days I use mostly Audio Research, but I'm not
sure that would be an all together fair comparison,
but who knows, I expect the new Series 3 units to make
    a good showing.

My speakers these days are Magneplanars, but I still have
my Dahlquist DQ-70s and a pair Vandersteen 2Cs. I've got
a pair of Large Advents too which I think might be a perfect
    match for the Series 3.

I'll take some pictures of the insides of the new Series 3
    power amp after it arrives.

Here are pictures of the Series 3 with and without the tube
    cage in place.

My apologies to DynakitParts and Dave in VA,

I didn't realize this was a manufacturers forum.

I've been visiting the Dynaco Tube Audio forum
off and on for the past 9 years when I have the
time and want to learn what's happening in the
    Dynaco community.

Dynaco is what got me interested in Hi-Fi over
50 years ago, and it's encouraging to see that
the brand is still highly prized and sought after.

The aftermarket is healthy with a number of
people making improvements to an already
    legendary product.

A lot of the stuff that seemed great in the 60's
and 70's hasn't held up too well. I buy on eBay
now and then, but have noticed that a lot of
big brands are sold for parts or As-Is now.

Phase Linear comes to mind as just one of the
biggies we all had back in the day that are rarely
sold in working condition. Pioneer gear is another
(except for their tape decks) that haven't aged well.

I find the older Sony ES, Nakamichi and Yamaha
gear from the 1970's is still working, and in some
    instances sells for high prices.

Even the Dynaco A25s can still be found in good
working condition due to their rubber woofer surrounds.

What was built well still works and sounds pretty
good. Maybe not The Absolute Sound but better
than what's for sale at Best Buy or the Bose store.

This forum is for anything that is Dynaco tube based so if you want to discuss this, it is OK ..

The Dynaco ST-70X does not compete with either the VTA ST-70 or the Dynakitparts ST-70. The Dynaco ST-70X is a WIRED amp. 90+% of all VTA amps are sold as KITS. I believe all of the Dynakitparts ST-70's are KIT amps.. My beef with the new ST-70X was that it was way OVERPRICED @ $3000 USD for the amp. In July of this year one ST-70X (new in box) was put up on Ebay and sold for $1213 USD. Link below ... What a shock it must have been for Radial Engineering to see their $3000 amp sell for less than half their asking price.

You can't go "upscale" with the Dynaco name. Panor tried that in the early 1990's when they sold an "all new" wired Dynaco ST-70 for about a $1000. It didn't sell and dropped out of sight after 2 or 3 years. So here we are after about 25 years with another "Lets go upscale with Dynaco" idea. History will repeat itself and in a few years the Dynaco ST-70X will probably fade away like the Panor version.

$3000 USD Dynaco ST-70X sells for $1213 USD

No apologies needed for me. I just thought you might be confused by some of the posts if you weren't familiar with this board. Great people here. Lotsa Dynaco knowlege.

I did not mean to be so oblique in my reply...when I saw the post after a rather...healthy...discussion on a previous thread I knew there may be opinions on this! There are many good amps around and it is a matter of taste, price and personal preference. You will enjoy your setup, it sounds solid. I do have a Phase Linear 400 in the basement which I think still works if you are interested!

Now there is one thing the new ST70 has going for it is the rounded cage. I could get into having the rounded cage for my MK3s as well as my ST70. Maybe in a deep powder blue.

I would prefer a cage in non-magnetic material, to avoid hum from the mains transformer. Any color,
    but preferably flat top.

Cutting to the chase - please report how it sounds!

I have driven my Maggies with up to 75 WPC in tubes - then I went with a 225 watt brute-force SS amp. Truly opened them up. But, the room they are in is 27 x 17 x 10 (feet).
