    Passive Pre Amp

Post by mantha3 on Sat Jun 11, 2011 12:48 pm

    Hi,

I had been looking for a passive pre-amp for some time now. I ended up having one built for me by Mapletree audio. the cost was $800.00 which was pretty high but fair (spendy parts).

In Dec. of 2010 I think Bob and Roy had a poll for new product ideas.. I think a few new owners of the ST120 and the new monoblocks may like the idea of a passive preamp/Simple Attenuator (High gain VTA in particular). Something like what I have but with more reasonible cost parts may be a good product idea? it also would be cool to have the same Stainless Steel chasis and black to match the classic ST70 look.

What I have in my passive pre:
-DACT CT2 100k Attenuator (Link) with a BENT Attenuator Remote kit (Link).
-Elma switch for the input selection (4 RCA input sources)
-6 pair of Connex RCA connectors
-On/Off toggle switch (This just turns On/Off the power to the motor that turns the attenuator via the remote)
    -LED for the power indicator.

That is about it. This is pretty much it. the power cord to the thing is just to power the motor that turns the attenuator via the remote.

The main benefit is the remote volume control so I can have my amp and passive preamp right by the other audio componenets.

The main cost was the DACT Attenuator and the BENT audio Remote kit....

PS - It is kind of fun to push the volume Up / Down btn on the remote and seeing the attenuator knob go... Worth 800? Not according to the wife ;-)

gee Mantha3, not to make you feel bad but I could have built that for you for $600.
I was looking at those same exact parts about two months ago.
I'm currently working on something very similar that I hope to price at under $400.

    Ahhh Jeezzz.

I figured I could have done something along these lines for cheaper.

The spendy parts were the DACT 100K Attenuator and the BENT Remote kit. I did hear that you can use and Elma Attenuator if you spec in the Elma to have it with the tab that comes out the back of the Attenuator. This is where the BENT motor connects.

I think Generic Gold RCA connects would be fine. The BENT Attenuator Remote kit works great.

I think this would be a good idea Roy.
