Dave at Vinyl Nirvana turned me on to a very simple fix for those of us who have fully manual turntables where the tone arm/catridge/stylus just churns in the run-out groove until you bolt out of your nap and realize you're chewing up the stylus.

It's spendy -- $60 -- but well worth it. Simply put, it installs beneath the tone-arm travel, and when you hi the run-out groove, it triggers a little lifter. No, it won't turn off the turntable. But it picks up the tone-arm and gets it out of harm's way.

Here's a link. Their installation instructions make no sense, but fiddle with it, work the geomotry a bit, and you'll figure it out. Well worth the money and the effort!

i would highly recommend that you make sure you have room for this before buying it. one of my tables is a technics mark 2 and there is no room to mount one of these. i found out the hard way after buying an audio technica safety raiser. there are some good tables out there that have an auto lift/shut off feature.
