Time Delay Relay

I have ordered a VTA ST-120 to be built by Bob Latino. I'm having the Time Delay Relay installed more as a precautionary tool in case or power surges. I'm sure I could have emailed Bob with the question I have but thought rather than take up Bob's valuable time that posting this question here could get me the answer or at least make other forum members aware of this option which I think is relatively new.

OK...the question is: When installing the Time Delay Relay which has the red and green LEDs where exactly are these LEDs visible on the amp when the TDR is installed in the amps intended location?

I'm sure if someone were to customize the amp assembly it can be just about anywhere but I'm curious about where they would be on a 'standard' build.

Hi Blake,

The red and green diodes are not visible outside the amp. They are only visible inside the amp when the bottom cover is removed. When the amp is built and you turn the amp ON the red diode should light which just shows the proper application of power to the board. The green diode will light only after the relay clicks on and high voltage is applied about 17 seconds later.

These two diodes are only indicators for the builder of the board. I had a situation a couple of weeks ago where a kit builder Emailed me and mentioned that the red diode came on but the green diode never came on the relay never clicked. I had him remove the board and examine the underside of the board where the solder connections are made. Sure enough, he had forgotten to solder one of the six connections of the relay to the TDR board. Upon soldering that connection, the board worked fine ...

From outside the amp though you can hear the relay "click" when high voltage is applied.

Thanks Bob. I was curious because I've read about how the chassis are fabricated to duplicate the original design. Wasn't sure if you modified the chassis to allow these two LEDs to be visible.

Just thinking out loud, though...making them visible WOULD be a rather nice feature, the kind that commercial audiophile manufacturers would use to justify raising the price a few hundred dollars. Twisted Evil

I remember those Harmon Karden Citation 17's (I think) that had two rows of different colored LED's. In 1977 I think they were $50 per LED. And I think those SAE components were the same way.

You could extend the LEDs with wires and mount them in one of the cooling slots.
