    Advice on a pre-amp Empty Advice on a pre-amp

    Post by Dave_in_Va Thu Jul 18, 2013 10:02 pm

I'm loving the sound of my VTA ST-70 amp SO much, I'm going to order a pre-amp. I have a Music Hall 5.1 turntable and a Onkyo 7030 if I want to listen to CDs. I'm deep into vinyl, though. My pre-amp is currently a Yaqin MS-12B. I'm thinking I should go with the VTA SP-10 and a PH-10 or PH-12??

I listen to mostly late-'60's early '70's psychedelia, acid-folk, etc. Moonkyte, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Village Green Kinks, new psych like the Black Angels. No jazz, no classical. Some UK folk like Gryphon.

    Advice is GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Dave

PS...Man...the WCPAEB are sounding GREAT as it is!

the PH10 is a better match for the SP10 power supply than the PH12

for octal fans, I have a new board that combines the SP10 and PH12 circuits, using octal tubes and fully regulated power supply, all on one board,
see my other post (new product announcement) about that

Now I'm tempted to try the octal version. I have a small stash of 6SL7s and 6SN7s but no extra 12AX7s.

What are the pros and cons to going with the octals?

Thanks for all of the help.

two possible cons, neither of which is important if you like the sound of octal tubes (most people who have tried them prefer them)
the preamp will have to be taller (about 5" instead of 4") and they use twice as much power and generate more heat.

I decided to go with the SP-10 with the PH-10.
    I'm pretty excited.

    Thanks for the help.

Are you going to build this? Or buy it completed?

I'm getting it built and ready to go. Can't wait!
(I've built a couple of guitar amps from kits but I wanted this to be just right and I'm not really the neatest solderer in the universe.)

    Got my pre-amp!!
SP-10 with the PH-10 phono section. It sounds great with my ST-70. Great build on both pieces and my fancy new 180 gram LPs sound killer!
The packing job on the pre-amp was so well done, I expected to find a Faberge Egg when I finally got the double boxing opened.
I had a problem when I initially got everything set up but Troy (the builder) worked closely with me and we figured out that my "hum" was due to my ancient Variac putting out 102 volts. Reset to 120v, re-biased the EL34s....dead quiet.
This is a really nice operation you guys have set up. Everyone is very friendly and very knowledgeable.
    Thanks!

Not to hijack this thread but are you offering a kit with all the components necessary to build a preamp with this new pcb?

Just for the record, I decided not to go with the octal tubes. I'm sure they sound great, though.
