Has anyone tried 6N6P Russian tubes on M-125 monoblocks. Does it require to modify a lot of things to make them sing ? comments will be appreciated.

The Russsian 6N6P is not compatible with the 12AU7 type driver tubes as found on the VTA M-125 monoblocks (or the VTA ST-70 or ST-120 also). The only recommended driver tubes for these amps are 12AU7, 12BH7, 5963, 5814, 6189, ECC82 or the Mullard CV4003.

Compared to the 12AU7 the difference is in the filament circuit. If an amp had point to point wiring, changing the circuit would be a snap. But unfortunately with a printed circuit it would require cutting traces. The Russian 6n6 or [6H6] is a little brother to the venerable 6H30pi. Like the 12AU7 to the 12BH7. Both are very low noise very good preamp/driver tubes. The difference is the 6H30pi is a silver hammer, the 6N6 is a little slower but a lot more musical. If you want bass that slaps you in the face you want the H if you want musical you want the N. The above article is a little bios toward N but the description is very correct. One problem the N is only available as NOS but cheap the H is almost gone as NOS but is in production as new so no designer will design a new amp or preamp around the N. However anyone who already has a preamp or amp that uses the 6H30 can substitute the 6N6 without change. It's worth the $3 per tube plus shipping to hear the difference. I am speaking from actual tube rolling in an amp that was designed for the 6H30pi.
