Would an ST120 exert more control over a speaker or just play louder compared with an VTA ST70? You know what this really means!

Both amps have very good control over any speaker they are used with. The bass is not boomy or uncontrolled with either amp. The control would be the same and distortion levels are also pretty much the same from the VTA ST-70 or VTA ST-120. The ST-120 has a 3 dB headroom advantage over the ST-70. To answer your question more directly > The ST-120 will play louder than the 70 and but does not really offer any more bass control. There are also subtle differences between the EL34 output tubes that the ST-70 uses and the KT88 output tubes that the ST-120 uses. Of course you can also use use KT88 output tubes in the VTA ST-70 which would really minimize any sound differences between the two amps other than the 3 dB of power advantage of the ST-120.
