No, the buzzing sound started before I got into the woodies. Still haven't grocked it, but maybe today . . .

I was wrong to describe it as whoooshing, although I did get that racket once years ago in an s/s amp (Heathkit AR-15), and turned out to be a bad cap in the power supply I was able to isolate by studying the schematic.
This is definitely AC of some kind, but if it were a straight AC leak you'd think it would be there all the time, but it's intermittent. Just cuts in and out. At sKiZo's suggestion I auditioned the few appliances we've got but it doesn't time with any of them. About the only associative cause-effect possibility is that it started about the time the power company installed a new xformer on the pole outside.
Glad you're enjoying Spotify; give their premium service with its player a try for a month and I bet you end up paying for it. As I understand it, the player caches tunes on your hard-drive much the same way better CD players do with their RAM, and the sound quality is a huge improvement over straight streaming -- I'm not even using a DAC. And I like the fact that they've got agreements with the artists' labels, so there's kick-back to the guys who make the music.
Scuttlebutt is Spotify is getting ready for an IPO, which could be an interesting ride. Then somebody like Time-Warner will suck them up and everything will go to Helen again.
BTW, those Bakelite knobs are readily available on FleaBay and Etsy, for about $9 each. I've got two spare small ones with pointers, and two of the larger ones without pointers, if anybody's interested . . .
