Thanks for the tips all. I think I'll devote some good burn-in time to these and report back after maybe 100 hours on them. Do I need to be actively playing music through the preamp for the burn-in or can it just be left on? As far as the cage is concerned I think I'll just run it open unless there are reasons not to. I tend to love the look of tube electronics and consider them to be functional electronic artwork.

The only reason to cover up your tubes is if you have cats, undisciplined children or drunks (do I repeat myself?) living with you.
I believe the consensus here is that pre-amp tubes are best run-in with a signal going into them. Just stick a CD in on "repeat." No need to have the power amps lit -- unless of course it's "Barry Manilow"s Greatest Hits" and you just gotta hear it over and over again for three days. This particular musical selection inflicts unimaginable torture on your amps' power tubes, however . . .
