ST-120 with Magnapan MMGs Empty ST-120 with Magnapan MMGs

VTA ST-120 up and running with main speakers.....After letting it run for a few hours on my bench with Parts Express C-Note speakers it was time to bring it upstairs and connect it to the Magnapan MMGs. I'm using a Schitt Saga preamp with a Bluesound Node2i streamer running through a Schiit Modi+ DAC. A B&W Subwoofer is connected to the second preamp outputs on the Saga. First observation, it takes the amp about 20-30 minutes to really sound sweet from start up. The tubes need to be at top operating temperatures I imagine. BASS..compared to the Yamaha M45, the bass from the ST-120 is about 300% better! Much tighter, rounder....I can turn the subwoofer down from 12 oclock to 9 oclock...Amazing difference! All other SQ is similar to the Yamaha in class A mode. But the Yamaha in class A is only about 10 watts. (120w in A/B mode) The Maggies need more than that.....so the St-120 wins this battle easily. Otherwise I'm amazed at how quiet the ST-120 is....ear on speakers quiet! More listening is required. The Yamaha M45 is a really great sounding amplifier, especially in class A mode......So the ST-120 has a tought row to hoe......

Thanks for the photo Roy ..

The VTA ST-120 runs in Class A/AB1 .. The amp runs in Class A up to about 20 watts and then transitions seamlessly over to AB1 at higher volume levels ..
