    SCA-35 Rebuild Empty SCA-35 Rebuild

    Post by GSX455 Sun Jan 23, 2022 11:53 am

I've found this site via Google, and I am new here and new to tube amps.  I have a SCA-35 that I bought.
It does not power up when I used a Variac to slowly raise power to not ruin the outputs.  I read where you should not operate these without a load, so I hooked up an old pair of speakers.  I checked the fuse in the back looks fine, passed continuity tests.
When nothing powers up, is this usually the output capacitors?
    Thanks for the help

Do the tubes light up at all? Have they been tested? I rebuilt one of these a few years ago, power supplies frequently are not working although an be easily replaced. Look up Tronola on the net, and then Dave's lab he has a written a whole article on restoration of the SCA35 called a 'New look at an old friend" he also sells boards for restoration, I think

If tubes aren't lighting up concerned about power transformer, if you have a voltmeter, check tube heater voltages if OK tubes may be blown

I'm still very new to tube amps, so I check the transformer for shorts, and impedance
I looked under the board and the wires underneath, the transformer have primary side and a secondary side
Where do checker the heater voltage?

    Thanks!

I would recommend a copy of the manual, it's available at this site, look on the "sticky" links
    above.
With schematics in hand everything is much easier !
