WZ34 vs. WZ68 Weber Copper Cap Empty WZ34 vs. WZ68 Weber Copper Cap

What's the difference between a WZ34 and WZ68 when used in an ST70?

Both are $22. the WZ68 can handle 450ma while the WZ34 can handle 225ma.

Is the WZ68 simply the same pinout and rectifier, but rated for higher current?

If so, then why would one buy a WZ34 when you could just buy a WZ68 and put it in the ST70?

    Hi Jason,

Both the WZ34 and the WZ68 are the same price. The WZ34 is made to replicate the current flow of a GZ34 rectifier tube and is fine in the ST-70 but will not flow enough current at higher volume levels in the ST-120. Only the WZ68 is recommended for the ST-120. You won't hurt anything by using a WZ68 in a STOCK ST-70. The ORIGINAL PA-060 power transformer has limitations on current flow within the amp anyhow.

I have never taken apart a Weber Copper cap but I believe there are diodes and resistors in there? I really don't know what the internal difference is between the WZ34 and the WZ68? Maybe you could Email Weber and find out?

WZ34 vs. WZ68 Weber Copper Cap Empty weber copper cap re-build

    Post by baddog1946 Sun Sep 26, 2010 1:46 pm

    Hi all:
I just re-built my Weber copper cap after it blew up. They are bonehead simple inside. The parts are all easy to find and consist of: 2 10 watt 20K wound resistors, 4-4007 diodes , 1 NTC 100D-11 thermistor for the delay. They are all on a little pc board that makes easy to do the replacement.
I replaced all the parts for less than $10 and it works fine. I had to do it myself because it takes weeks to get stuff down to Costa Rica. I found the parts here so I tried it and it works perfectly.
If you ever blow one make sure you change the thermistor its all the delay you will have and those thing flow a bunch so it is your insurance.

Here's my question and Weber's response:

    Jason,
You are right that the 68 is a higher current version of the 34. They are both the same pinout. The 34 has more series resistance and the output voltage will start to "sag" sooner than the 68 (this is what many guitar players want). You can use either one even though the amp was designed with a 34 in mind. Probably the only time you may notice a difference is running your amp at high volumes and/or with a high amount of bass.
