Preamplifier & Power Amplifier Compatibility Empty Preamplifier & Power Amplifier Compatibility

Post by TN Allen Tue May 23, 2023 10:32 am

Does anyone know where I can find a good explanation of the requirements for matching preamplifier output voltage and impedance to a power amplifiers input voltage and impedance. I'm particularly interested in the values for the PAS3X, ST70, Mark lll, ST35, and the unsuitability of solid state preamplifiers/amplifiers and tube amplifiers/preamplifiers.
    Thank you.

99% of audio equipment is totally compatible.
most all preamps want 0.5 to 1.0 v-rms input voltage.
most all amplifiers want 1.0 to 2.0 v-rms input voltage.
You are likely asking about input and output impedance.
Most solid-state preamps and amplifiers have an input impedance between 5K and 25K.
Most tube preamps and amplifiers have an input impedance between 100K and 470K.
The big variable is output impedance which varies all over the place.
Generally speaking, you want the output of the preamp to have an output impedance that is 1/10th of the amplifier impedance.
For example, 1K output impedance will work fine with any amplifier having an input impedance of greater than 10K.
You would experience some bass loss if the impedance ratio is lower than 10X,
for example, trying to drive an amplifier with a 5K input impedance (fairly rare, usually over 10K) with a preamp
that has an output impedance of 2K (fairly rare, but sometimes happens) would not work well.
Since we are in a tube audio forum, almost all tube amplifiers have an input impedance of 100K or greater.
The worst tube equipment (such as an old PAS3 or similar) has an output impedance of about 2K,
but that is NOT a problem driving any tube amplifier. It is however a problem trying to drive a solid state amplifier with an input impedance of less than 20K.

So, my SP 14 will work fine with this amp?

MAXIMUM AUDIO OUTPUT CURRENT: 17 A peak, per channel, both channels driven

    INPUT SENSITIVITY
    Low-Gain = 2.7 Vrms, Gain = 22 dB
    Mid-Gain = 1.4 Vms, Gain = 28 dB
    High-Gain = 0.55 Vrms, Gain = 36 dB
Gains Selectable via DIP Internal Dip Switches on Input Buffer
INPUT IMPEDANCE: 25 k Ohms (Single Ended or Balanced Inputs)
    PROTECTION CIRCUITS
    Fully Electronic, No Relays
    Mute Sequencing
    Distortion Detection (Clip Warning)
    Short Circuit Protection
    Over Current Protection
    Over Temperature Detection and Protection
SOA Detection (Output device safe operating area)
    PSU Fault Protection

    SNR & DYNAMIC RANGE
Rated output relative to output noise, inputs shorted: 115 dB
    NOISE VOLTAGE
Output noise voltage, inputs shorted: -119dBV, 1.1 uVrms

yes, of course. I would set your amplifier for lowest gain setting
