    Soldering tool Empty Soldering tool

Post by DarthBubba Fri Aug 24, 2012 2:27 am

Not strictly on-topic, but certainly related:

What soldering stations/irons do our Forum members use? Do you have a favorite? Is there a brand or model you that you dearly love, or one you avoid at all costs? I want to buy a newer one so that I can work on static sensitive circuits as well as my HollowState projects.

    Thanks,

I use a plain old Weller 40 watt with the fine tip. Nothin' fancy. When it gives out I drop $18 and get a new one.

For basic soldering, I use a Weller 35 Watt iron with a medium tip.
For circuit board soldering, I use a Weller 60 Watt temperature controlled iron with a fine tip.

I also have a Stahl soldering station from Parts Express. It worked fairly well when new, but temperature control is tricky and requires constant adjustment. Not recommended for circuit board use since the temp is unreliable.

Weller WLC100, they are about $45 and worth every penny. I used to buy a new 35w Weller or RadioShack pencil for $30 every year.
I'm on my 2nd Weller WLC100 now after about 6 years on the first one. Use it every day, and that's how long it lasts.

    Hi all:
I use a 40 watt iron with a fairly fine ceramic tip and an LED light on it that shines on the work spot. This iron has been doing all my soldering for the last 4 years and the tip is still pristine. It seems indestructible and is very easy to clean. Funny the ceramic tip is not more popular. Paid about $15 for it. I use a 600W dimmer switch to control the heat when necessary.
