A Tube Preamp Project? Empty A Tube Preamp Project?

    Post by Greg_M Mon May 30, 2011 4:15 pm

    Hey Bob....(et al)
I have a hankerin to build a tube preamp.

    I'm looking for simplicity.
I need a phono input and would like several others for CD, DVD, computer, whatnot, and of course....etc.

Tape In/Out is probably not necessary, nor an effects loop.

I was looking at the PAS-4 schematics since I remember you saying that you thought it sounded pretty good.
I'd probably prefer hustling the parts myself, rather than buying a kit.

    What do you think?

    PS
I have a NAD 1700 right now that works pretty well, but I want a project.

    Thanks

    Hi Greg,

You may want to consider the Tubes4hifi SP-8 preamp kit which does have a phono input. I have heard this preamp and IMHO, for about $600, it is as good as $2K - $3K preamps. Roy has done a fine job in designing this preamp. About 2 years ago Roy sent me one of the first SP-8 preamps. I had it here for 3 weeks, playing it every day. Dead quiet and great sound. My review for this preamp is at the link below ...

    Hey Greg,

Just built a SP-8 from the PCB and resistor/cap/tube sockets only type parts package. I can recommend it. Had a hum when I finished but Roy set me on the right track to fix it. Sounds great now, especially with the NOS RCA's I just got (originally did Chinese Pentas to check it out with). I'm looking for a new phono cartridge based on the niceness I hear from this preamp.

With the basic kit, you can mod it out to what you want pretty easily. I reused an old Nikko integrated cabinet (dead) with tons of space in there so I could have all the ins and outs etc. I wanted. May go for a tone control in the future with still tons of space left.

Good luck and have fun. I did.

I wonder if a person could extend the tube sockets up so they could be mounted on the outside of a chassis (displayed) without introducing noise into the preamp?
