6p15p-ev tubes in the Dynaco ST-35? Empty 6p15p-ev tubes in the Dynaco ST-35?

    Post by hrudu90 Mon Sep 19, 2011 9:52 am

I have some questions for the community regarding the ST35 and it is:

    • Can I use 6p15p-ev tubes in the Dynaco ST-35?

    • Can I use different tubes like Amperex EL84 in one channel and JJ EL84 in other channel?

    • Can I use one power tube per channel only?

    Hope you can help.

You can plug them in and they will probably work but the 6p15 types are rated at lower voltages than the EL84
and may have a short life. Depends on exactly how the tube is being used (plate/screen/grid currents). The 6p14 types
are the exact drop-ins for EL84/6BQ5.

    • Can I use different tubes like Amperex EL84 in one channel and JJ EL84 in other channel?

You CAN without risk of damage,as the two channels are completely independent. That will make no difference as to
push/pull matching though the two channels might SOUND different due to the different tubes.

    • Can I use one power tube per channel only?

NO! NO! NEVER do that. An imbalanced current flow will occur in the output transformer.

Everything that GP49 has said is good advice. The 6P14 and 6P15 are available on Ebay for almost the same price with the 6P14's just a little more costly. Last year I bought 10 of the 6P14's from Russia for about $40 shipped. That's only $4.00 a tube.

One other thing besides not using one output tube per channel. Don't ever run just ONE CHANNEL alone in the ST-35. The SINGLE bias resistor on an ST-35 is designed to draw current for FOUR EL84's (BOTH channels). If you plug the two output tubes into an ST-35 for just one channel, you will draw too much current and those two EL84's will "red plate" rather quickly. Just to understand, you CAN run just one channel at a time in an ST-70 (or the VTA ST-120) because in an ST-70 (or ST-120) each channel has separate bias resistors.

    Thank you Gentlemen!

    Bob,
I looked up for 6P14 tubes on ebay but they always come up as 6P14P.
Are they the same? Can I use them in the ST35?
    And how you like yours?

Yes, the 6P14P or 6P14P-EV is what you want. These should work fine in any EL84/6BQ5-equipped amp.

    Hi Hru,

Yes - the 6P14 and the 6P14P are the same tube ... I have two ST-35's here and use the 6P14P's as the output tubes in both. They sound fine and seem pretty durable .. Not one has failed in the past year or so. I would recommend them.
