Tung Sol KT150 Empty Tung Sol KT150

Post by merlot Thu Aug 15, 2013 8:41 pm

I recently saw references to Tung Sol KT150s. Does anyone know anything about them? Would they work in a ST120 or M125? If so, any changes required? Any benefits?

    Thanks.

I have heard of the "coming" of the Tung-Sol KT150's but as far as I know, the distributor, Newsensor in NY, does not as yet have them available for sale ..

Edit on 12/16/17 > I have had customers inform me that the Tung-Sol KT150's will not bias properly in either the VTA M-125's or the VTA ST-120 amps. My recommendation is that you not use KT150's  as output tubes in either amp.

I've been waiting for Tung Sol to release a datasheet.  But rumored to have 70W plate dissipation.  No telling what the heater current will be.  All you can really find is some company offering KT150s as an upgrade option for their current amps.   Is it really compatible in KT88 circuits or sounds best in a new design remains to be seen.

If they're simply a power upgrade from the KT-120 tubes, I'd expect to see the same sonic qualities (tight bottom end, great midrange, and refined highs is what I'm told to expect), but no significant increase in power output over the KT-88's in the ST-120.

I imagine they're the same bottle and all the changes are internal ...

KT-120's were announced several years before they actually hit the shelves?

I would think the M125 would be more suited to KT150. It would be interesting to know what the output of only 2 tubes per channel in that amp would be?

Here's a unofficial KT150 datasheet (or part of) in Russian.  Hard to read but I think the heater current is 1.8A nominal and up to 2.0A max (row 2.2).   Row 2.3 maximum plate current of 180mA @ 400V = 72W!  If someone speaks Russian let us know what the tables have to say.  Thanks!

From hificomponents.ru web pages if you can read between the lines.

"KT150 Tung Sol . We had been heard out experimental samples. Sounding of a new radio tube was similar on KT120 and KT88 Genalex Gold Lion but more air and deep, wide the scene turned out, sounding of a low-frequency range became lower and fundamental and thus clear, a voice more natural and live, top at a lamp pure free and the main thing not раздражающе ringing. Also have still noticed one feature in sounding KT150 sounds became last Cesaria Evora there was more live. We heard such similar effect at comparison of cables, on Western Electric. The radio tube has the big capacity. Comparisons were spent on amplifier Cary sl80. And though direct replacement power vacuum tube KT88 on KT150 it is not absolutely correct, it works not absolutely in the modes, but even so the essential difference in sounding of these lamps if the amplifier under these lamps adjusts sounding even better was audible."

Hi Arledgsc, any chance of up sizing the chart 50% or double. At this size I am unable to read. Even though I don't read Russian I think if you compare it to the KT120 data sheet you can probably figure out what is written. The tube looks like that building in London. Never seen a bottle that shape before.

Sure... I cranked up to maximum 800 pixels wide allowed by the Photobucket editor.  Not a lot of resolution in the original copied so the Cyrillic text is smeared.  But it may be easier for you to read.....

I can make out row 2.3 "ТОК АHОДА, mA" which translates to English as "Anode Current, mA".  (My Ex is Russian so a little rubbed off).

I found this on the net. Apparently they are available in other parts of the world.

The data sheet has been available several places around the 'net, but this forum won't let new users post external links.

A lot of wrong guesses here.  Max. plate dissipation is up again, to 70 watts.  Bottle shape is new.  Heater current is about like KT120.

Google will get you there with search terms:
