I went with the PH16 because it can do both MM and MC, figuring I will want to try MC sometime in the future. Also the dip switches for loading adds flexibility.

Re: What phono, preamp do I want?
Maybe Roy can correct me, but I believe both PH14 and PH16 will handle high output MC cartridges. Both would need a step up transformer to allow use of low output MCs. I'm guessing both have gain around 45dB. Gain needed for typical low output MC cartridges is around 60-70 dB.

yes, solderblob Dave is correct, both PH14 & PH16 have standard 40-44db gain for MM, will work fine with high output MCs, but you'll always need an SUT for low output MCs

Re: What phono, preamp do I want?
I'm back revisiting this thread after a having a little problem with the ST-120. I ordered the PH14 as a kit. Then I'm leaning to the SP14 preamp later on. Thanks for all the replies. I'm running the ST-120 through a 5A variac and I think it's at its limit. I kind of wish I had gotten the 20A model. Does the PH14 need to be powered through a variac or can it be plugged directly into the mains which most the time runs between 118 to 122, sometimes as much as 124?

Re: What phono, preamp do I want?
The ST120 amp only uses about 2.5A
The PH14 should be fine running on normal AC of 117-123vac, all voltages inside are fully regulated.
