16 ohm speakers Empty 16 ohm speakers

Post by Roy Mottram Sun Aug 29, 2021 11:01 pm

I'd like to hear from every person reading this if they now have or recently (past ten years)
have had any 16 ohm speakers. Seems most speakers these days are 8 ohm or 4 ohm (or something in between).
If you have 16 ohm speakers, just post a reply, maybe say what brand/type they are, and if you know their sensitivity/efficiency (say 85db, 90db or 95db, or whatever).

Lowther PM2A drivers in Medallion front firing Horn cabinets.

The voice coils are actually 15ohms and they're 102db.

Quad ESL speakers. Impedance really swings, but well past 16 ohms in lower notes and I run them off the ST70 16 ohm taps.

There don’t seem to be too many, but I had an old pair of Chartwell LS3/5A’s years ago, which I believe were 15 ohm. Very inefficient, maybe 83. The fairly new Falcons are 15 ohm.

I also run my ESL-57’s off a 16 ohm tap - in this case a Dynaco ST-35 with some spiffy MAGNEQUEST MQ565 output transformers.

I have a pair of Altec 615A duplex drivers mounted in open baffles stands I built. These are 16 ohm nominal. They are rated at 97 dB at 1 watt and 4 feet. No problems driving them with any of the Dynaco amps. Also have a single Electro Voice Georgian. 16 ohm nominal and efficient but I do not have the specs. Maybe mid 95 dB or so. Easy to drive as well.

Many of the the older vintage speakers were 16 ohm. Think about the 1955 Dyna MK II coming without a 4 ohm tap for a year or two. Just 8 and 16 ohm for the A430 transformer. If you blow the diaphragms many of the replacements are 8 ohms. Not good as the crossovers were designed for 16 ohm. Assuming the speaker has a diaphragm that is replaceable.

Also the original Z-565 output transformers (SCA-35 and ST-35) which did not have a 4Ω tap.

I used the 16Ω taps of my ST-70 when I owned my Quad ESL-57, the same as Earl and j.click.

I picked up a JBL C45 cabinet with a pair of the low frequency 130A drivers and the 275 high frequency with H5040 horns. Im currently using an upgraded SCA-35, but shopping around for a system that may be a bit more appropriate

Saturday I'm picking up a pair of 1960's Japan market Pioneer kit speakers that are 16 ohm.
I'm going to add an ST 35 to my system and run them off that.

I have a pair of 16 Ohm EV 12TRXB speakers I bought in 1969. They have been in many cabinets I've built over the past 50 plus years, usually to the plans EV provided. I used one of these a few years ago with a Mark lll I built using the Tubes4Hifi 12AU7 driver board. I'll probably try one again with another Mark lll I am building using the 6SN7 driver board and transformers from dynakitparts. The EIA sensitivity is listed as 52 db on a .pdf file available online by searching for 12TRXB.

I used these speakers for many years with original ST 70 and PAS 3X kits I built around 1969 also. I've since upgraded both, but no longer use them.

I forgot to mention that I recently bought a pair of 6 1/2" Silver Flute and another pair of 7" Scanspeak. The first has an SPL of 89.9, I cannot find a number for the second.
