New Tube Amp!!?? Empty New Tube Amp!!??

Post by Santa Lee Sun Sep 22, 2024 3:13 pm

Hi, thanks for this forum, I like to read and learn. So... I just procured a Dynaco 7 with a VTA kit from the mid 90's. It has 3 12AU7's and 4 Tesla E34l's with the brown base. I heard that meant something.
I would like to get some recommendations as to replacement tubes for the Teslas.
For the moment I am using my WiiM pro plus as a temporary Preamp and have Klipsch KLF 10s for speakers. Sometimes music can get a bit harsh on the top end.
Thanks for any information y'all can pass on. Lee

The tubes you like the sound of best will always be subjective, and influenced by the rest of your system.

I've tried and liked the ElectroHarmonix EL34s, Nesstone 6CA7, Gold Lion KT66, and Tung Sol 7581A with a preference for the latter.

I also prefer a 12BH7a in the center in place of the 12AU7.

    YMMV!

You can always experiment with different cables and/or interconnects to see if you can find something that's softer on the top end, but it's sort of a shot in the dark. It's possible that your speakers are part of the harshness.  Simple things like placement can vary the tonal balance a bit to help offset some treble output.   A simple unscientific experiment might be to add some wool/felt strips near the horn tweeter to help absorb some reflections - Amazon has 1/2" ironing wool/felt sheets < $20 that do nicely....you can vary the size and placement of the felt.

If you're ambitious, some parts upgrades to the crossover can clean up some of the schmutz. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/92812-killer-klipsch-klf-10-project-true-mods-effectively-placing-them-in-a-higher-class-of-speaker/
