Before I plugged in a really expensive 5AR4/GZ34, I would use a cheap one to test things out.
I have (and I am still using) a Ruby 5AR4/GZ34 I picked up from AES (Antique Electronics Supply) along with the Valve Art (Shugang) EL34B's to test out my ST70 after a rebuild. It was only like $12 for each of these tubes, for a total of about $60. I don't run the Valve Art's as I am running the Russian Tubes right now. But I have them as test pieces. Last thing I would want to do is fire up the amp with expensive tubes to find out there is a problem why the rectifier tube blew....
