Alvin Lee - Ten Years After lead gutarist - dead at 68

Post by Bob Latino on Thu Mar 07, 2013 8:27 am

Alvin Lee, the lead guitarist of the British rock/blues band "Ten Years After", died yesterday in Spain after complications set in after a routine surgical procedure. Lee was 68 years old. Alvin had some of the "fastest fingers" of any lead guitarist of his generation. The video below is recorded live at Woodstock in 1969 and is one of Ten Years After's most notable hits .. "I'm Going Home". If you don't have time to watch the whole video, skip ahead to about 8:30 into track. From there to the end shows Alvin at his best ...

    Sad sad.

Nice video. I'm lucky to have 3 or 4 vinyls with him/them.

    RIP Alvin
slightly off topic, but still my favorite guitar performance (Led Zeppelin-Startway to Heaven)is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q7Vr3yQYWQ (7 minutes to 9 minutes)
and in this much older version, kind of blurry, but you can really see his fingers moving http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBtxhRnM2rM
    ( 6 minutes to 8.5 minutes)
if you want to see a teen girl shred a guitar, check this out, at the one minute mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stlYDxHftb4
and a great Pink Floyd cover of Comfortably Numb here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILbharIiEig&list=UU-MkY-TsU-RoxVoHXxnbonA&index=5
but this girl here is probably one of the great guitarists in the world today . . .

Ten Years After was a terrific blues/rock band, and Lee was at the top of the guitar playing class. My favorite is "I'd Love to Change the World." Crank your attenuator up to 11 and "I'll leave it up to you...."
