IR Remote Control for PAS
I would like to continue using my PAS3, however it would be nice to have full IR remote control of source, volume, etc. Is there a unit that can be placed ahead of the PAS that would allow IR remote source selection and contain an attenuated volume control all without affecting the signal, thereby allowing the PAS to provide the preamp function? Also would be nice to have both line and phono option.
Just thinking.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
There are a lot of aftermarket remotes available. Best low cost use Alps motorized pots. The biggest problem is room in the case.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
I guess I'm not asking this question correctly. What I want to know is this:
Is there such a thing as a stand alone unit that could be placed in the signal path ahead of the PAS3 that would contain the following:
Main on/off switch
A switched AC outlet
Several line/phono in terminals and line/phono out terminals to go to the PAS3
A source selector to rotate among the line/phono inputs
A volume control
All above controlled by an IR remote control.
The idea is to connect my various source inputs to the line/phono in of this stand alone unit and then out to the PAS3. On/off, volume, and source selection would provided by this new unit via IR remote.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
That would not be a good arrangement for a lot of reasons. The only way it would work properly is to replace the PAS3 volume.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
Thanks Sailor. That answers my inquiry. Way beyond what I had envisioned. Guess I will just have to put the PAS3 back on the shelf. Too bad, because I always loved the way it sounded, however, I really do enjoy the convenience of the remote functions on my HK PT2300.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
I have ordered several types of remote controls tu be used in scratch built pre- and power amps (also called integrated amps as I always use a potentiometer and occassionally a few switchable inputs).
I have found, that at least for me in Sweden, I can get really cheap stuff from the Chinese megastore AliExpress. Here are three models I have ordered:
The original MV02 with Alps pot
MV04 (upgrade??)
A simpler but small remote.
A yet simpler model with ALPS pot.
Note number of inputs. The MV02/04 has sex inputs, whereas the second model has room for 4 inputs and the latter that comes w/o input selector may contro up to 6 inputs. It even has a display showing % of potentiometer setting.
Searching around may end up in cheaper models and other models.
In my view, I'd say any of the models would work, but due to the complicated swtiching arrangement, some extra relays will propably be needed to take care of equalisation networks.

If it were for me..
I would choose the MV02/04 with the Sex Inputs as suggested by Soundbrigade.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
I would install a single motor-driven pot in a small box located on the wire between the pas-3 and the poweramp. That way i could change volume without touching a screw on any amp.
This solution could be sold as a stand-alone solution to any amp.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
BREADING,
I have exactly what you are looking for, I made this for myself a few months ago and use it with my SP14 preamp.
See photo below - this is full function remote control, has 4 line inputs, volume, balance, bass, treble, and a separate gain function so you can match it to your system.
I run the output to the AUX input on my SP14, you could do the same on your PAS3. I'm willing to sell it for the cost of the parts - $150.

Hi Roy,
I am interested.
Just to be sure, these are the features I want in the unit:
Main on/off switch
A switched AC outlet
Line and phono in terminals and line/phono out terminals to go to the PAS3
A source selector to rotate among the line/phono inputs
A volume control
Hand held remote
All above controlled by an IR remote control.
The idea is to connect my various source inputs to the line/phono in of this stand alone unit and then out to the PAS3. On/off, volume, and source selection would provided by this new unit via IR remote.

Roy could you share the design of your IR remote? Looks like just what I need to run a phono pre into my power amps.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
this remote control unit has 4 inputs and ONE output, so it wouldn't be possible to separate the line and phono functions as you mention.
If build into a larger chassis it could have a switched AC outlet, but as is, it does not.
The knob on the right controls all of the functions as does the handheld remote.
Push for function, rotate to increase or decrease (volume, balance, bass, treble, gain, input selection, etc).
One only, available as is.

Re: IR Remote Control for PAS
there is a manual power switch as shown on the left, but that only applies power to put the unit in standby.
The actual power on is controlled by the remote control.
