We all know that vinyl records have made a comeback in the last 5 - 10 years even in the face of streaming audio and digital downloads. There has also been a resurgence in the old audio cassette. A manufacturer in Springfield, Missouri called National Audio Company is quietly still producing audio cassettes and they claim that demand is on the rise .. One writer feels that either the "resurgence is due to the fact that aging '80s kids now have (a little) more disposable income to entertain their nostalgic whims or its rise is a repudiation of the colder experience that digital music offers" Hell, they may reintroduce the Walkman again! Read all the news about the audio cassette's return at the link below ..

Return of the audio cassette ?

Making a comeback? Heck I still listen to them in my old Isuzu Trooper. I have a lot of Frank Zappa concerts from 70's and 80's on cassette. Pure uncensored Frank!

    Good heavens!
I've got a Nak Dragon and RX-505 hiding in the basement. Want them? Pay the freight or drive that Suzi up here. I'm holding out for an 8-track resurgence.

I like to keep a cassette deck around because I have a lot of cassettes from the old days, including some material I don't have on other sources.

But as far as recording new tapes, well... it wouldn't be my format of choice.

My beef is that you can't find any decent new-stock tape. Most of it is several dozen years old and they get brittle over time, even still sealed in their little cases. They were great for preserving your vinyl, or bumping down the road in a 4WD. If somebody came up with some new, fresh, stretched tape that would bias to metal-grade, I could be suckered into taking a Dremel to the NAK's heads.

I still listen to my cassettes a lot! I've always loved the Nak decks: I have a 480, the low end version, never had a 3-head one but one day..... The Naks have their own sound, absolutely.

A couple of friends have recently mentioned they want to listen to cassettes again so I replaced belts on a couple of decks: fiddly but fun. One was a higher-end Yamaha that sounded pretty goo, the other was a Nak RX-303 (I think) that5 sounded GREAT! The motto: if you want to listen to tape again and drag that deck form the loft, do the belts first! It transforms the sound, even if the belts aren't completely dead. Very Happy

The popularity (and the success of Record Store Day) is why there is now a "Cassette Store Day" every year.

IMHO Cassette can sound extremely good, as long as you have good equipment. A cheap player will sound really, really bad. Nak, some Yamaha, Some TEAC and some higher-end Sharp decks have always been my favorites. They're still really cheap on eBay, just about the only quality vintage audio gear that's still truly affordable.
