What is the difference between the K40Y-9 (silver) and K42Y-2 (green) models of the PIO caps ?.

I've used both and haven't noticed a difference in sound quality. They're both remarkably balanced with plenty of detail. Perhaps a touch on the warm side.

Primarily it is how the metallic material is applied. One uses actual metal film, one uses a metalized film. In practice, do a blind comparison to a conventional film cap of good quality and screened for value. I will state that well made capacitors from reliable manufacturers screened for value using a reliable cap-checker and used within design parameters will be pretty much indistinguishable one from another.
On the other hand, bragging rights have value to some - no small thing.

What Corndog has written here is exactly what I have noticed with the K40-Y and the K42-Y caps. There is very little (if any) difference between these two capacitors at least if used as main coupling capacitors in a tube amp. Both are slightly on the warm side and both give a very wide and deep "3D type" soundstage. If you buy them on Ebay, K40 caps tend to be a little more expensive than the K42's but that does not mean that they are "better". K42 caps also tend to be somewhat smaller in size than their K40 counterparts with the capacitance and voltage ratings being the same. This makes a K42 easier to fit into some situations that have limited space.

Thanks for the answers.
The main reason is the space (as commented Bob), if the price is lower (k42) also helps.
It is good that the performance of the two models is similar.
