12AU7 Tube Choice Empty 12AU7 Tube Choice

Is there a general consensus on which 12AU7/ECC82's tend to sound the best in the MKIII's. I am open to NOS or new production. Not trying to open a can of worms here Wink

There is no place for a 12au7/ECC82 in a Dynaco MkIII. In those amps 6AN8(a) is used.
A modified amp may have a place for them. That said, any tube fulfilling the spec
    for 12AU7/ECC82 would fit.

I should have been more specific - my amps have the Tubes4hifi boards in them which do take the 12AU7.

Then every 12AU7 that folllows spec will do.

I like either the RCA clear top or Telefunken smooth plate 12AU7s in my Mark 3s, but that is my preference. I also like Amperex Bugle Boy and original Mullards too. Other people may have different results depending on personal preference and the speakers being used as both the clear tops and the Telefunken smooth plate tubes can be too bright and forward for some people.

5963, 5814 and 6189 tubes are military/industrial versions of a 12AU7. If you go on Ebay you will find many of these that are USA made by GE, RCA and Sylvania. Some are new and some are used that test "as new". The pricing is very good. I have used these myself in my own VTA ST-120 and VTA M-125's. The quality control was very good back in the day when these were made. Check them out at the links below ..

5814 tubes on Ebay > 5814 tube links on Ebay
