I just noticed Dynakitparts now has TWO 240 volt transformers for those that live in countries having 240 volt AC mains.

One is the PA-521 which is for the dual channel ST-70. Those with 240 volt mains can also use this power transformer as a base for a custom dual channel 35-40 watt amplifier based on EL34, 6L6, KT66 or KT77 tubes.

Also available is a replacement 240 volt transformer for the Dynaco SCA-35 integrated amp or the Dynaco ST-35 power amp. It is the PB-028-1. Those with 240 volt mains could also make use of this power transformer as the basis for a custom EL84 or 6V6 dual channel amp.

240 volt power transformers now available from Dynakitparts for European Dynaco tube amp users ... Empty NOT FOR ALL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

    Hi
I just want to let you know that the 240volts power transformer  that i used in my VTAst 70
is not suitable for the 220volts of the Greek power supply.
It gives me lower secondary measurments and a useless transformer!!

    regards

    Kost,

The 240 volt power transformer on the VTA ST-70 will work fine with voltages in the 230 - 240 volt range. This equates to 115 - 120 VAC here in the USA. I looked up what the AC voltage should be in Greece and numerous sites mentioned you should have 230 VAC @ 50 Hz. Why you have 220 VAC (which is lower than normal), I do not know ?

As a solution, you could get a 240 volt variac and run your 220 VAC into the variac and then turn the dial on the variac until you get 230 - 240 volts OUT.

Below are two web sites which state that Greece has 230 volts @ 50 Hz AC voltage.

I might be able to answer that one. Before individual countries joined the European Union each country pretty much had its own voltage standard. The EU decided, in its wisdom, to harmonise the UK standard mains voltage of 240v AC and the European standard of 220v AC, at 230v AC. Fine in theory but the costs of replacing all the supply equipment to deliver 230v was uneconomic (there being no advantage whatever in changing, other than ‘harmonisation’). So to avoid accusations of failure to harmonise, they simply fiddled with the legal voltage limits, nothing actually changed!.

The law now states 230v +10% -6%, thereby allowing the European 220v system to stay at 220v and UK to stay at 240v, yet both appear to be harmonised!

If this is not a problem in itself it also means that a country that already had a standard of 230V means that now they can throw out any voltage between 220V and 240V approx.

    Anyone for a variac Smile

actually voltages will vary ( and has done so ) between 220 or even lower and up to 235V, depending
on location relative the transformer station and time of day.

I even spent one holiday in a rented house in the archipelago where the only power line was
shared with a lighthouse. And it took a few days before i realized why the light flickered
with such regularity in the evenings :-)
